Escape from the turnpike travel plazas!

Truckers, don’t assume that since you got stuck at one of those turnpike travel plazas for one of your breaks that your possibilities for exercise or adventure are limited. Earlier this month I parked at the Oakmont-Plum Travel Center on the Pennsylvania Turnpike north of Pittsburgh, and biked right through the access gate to the employee lot and down to the Allegheny River a couple miles away. Click here for the route.
This particular route is pretty hilly, and passes by some nice neighborhoods and a few places to eat, not to mention a nice view of the river.

Best of all, while you’re burning calories and having fun, you’re not paying those exorbitant prices for mediocre food at the travel plaza!

About kevinmckague

I left my former dead-end job in 2006 in order to become a truck driver. I wanted a career that was recession-proof, and that offered more opportunity for adventure. Now I travel the country with my bike in the passenger seat, and look for new places to visit whenever the opportunity presents itself.
